2023 Barbara Holston Scholarship Winners

The Barbara Holston Education Fund is proud to announce its three 2023 scholarship winners. The winners are:

  • Brandon McDaniel
  • Jarie Hawkins
  • Johnny Warren

Brandon is currently attending Tarrant County College, where he anticipates graduating in the Spring of 2024. Brandon plans to continue his education at the University of North Texas after he finishes at TCC. He will be majoring in Political Science. Brandon is excited to pursue a career in International Law with a focus on human rights. He is looking forward to a career that will allow him to travel and make an impact on the world around him.

Jarie was scheduled to attend Langston University, an HBCU in Oklahoma, in the 2023 Fall semester. She is looking forward to her major in Agriculture Business. Jarie anticipates graduating in the Spring of 2027, though she has hopes of accelerating her degree in order to graduate early and kick off her career in agriculture. Jarie is excited to pursue a career in agriculture, and she is particularly excited to work with animals. She wants to use her degree to help people inside and outside of her community gain financial stability and food security.

Johnny is attending Texas Premier Technology Institute where he is pursuing a Software Developer Certification. He is also attending Tarrant County College where he is working on an Associate of Arts in Teaching. Johnny will complete his Software Developer Certification in October. He anticipates graduating with his Associates degree in Spring 2024. Johnny has multiple career options ahead of him, but he would most like to pursue a position teaching software development and coding.

2021 Barbara Holston Scholars Named

The Barbara Holston Education Fund is proud to announce its five 2021 scholarship winners. Each scholar wins a $1,000 award toward their college tuition this year. The winners are:

  • Nicholette Braswell, Eastfield College
  • Sstephanee Shelton, Tarleton State University
  • Sholaunda Johnson, Tarrant County College
  • Shala Thompson, Tarrant County College
  • Faith Wiley, The University of Texas at Arlington

The Fund is named in honor of Ms. Holston, who served as the senior executive at the Fort Worth Housing Authority, now Fort Worth Housing Solutions, from 1991 to 2014. Throughout her career, she encouraged thousands of program participants to pursue higher education and vocational training to improve their ability to provide for themselves and their families.

Since its inception in 2015, the Fund has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships to institutions of higher education and technical training programs to support FWHS residents and family members who are pursuing higher education or technical certifications. Scholarships are entirely supported by private donations. All contributions are tax deductible.

Five 2020 Barbara Holston Scholars Announced

The Barbara Holston Education Fund has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to FWHS program participants who are pursuing higher education or vocational training on their path to self-sufficiency.

The fund was established in honor of Barbara Holston, who served as senior executive of the Fort Worth Housing Authority, FWHS’ predecessor, for 23 years.

The 2020 winners are:

  • Mercedes Ayala, Texas Wesleyan University
  • Rafael Escobedo, Tarrant County College
  • Sstephanee Garrison-Shelton, Tarleton State University
  • Denym Greer, Texas A&M Commerce
  • Taejah Odom, Texas Wesleyan University

BHEF Scholarships cover educational expenses such as tuition, books, course fees, supplies, course equipment and materials. The awards help FWHS residents overcome financial barriers that can deter them from post-secondary education.

Since its inception, the Barbara Holston Education Fund has awarded more than $15,000 in scholarship funds to help participants increase their academic and vocational achievements. Scholarships are supported solely by contributions to the Fund, a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
